On Tuesday morning, about a dozen small business owners gathered at Luther’s Table for Renton’s monthly Startup & Small Business Coworking meetup. This month’s featured presenter: the Somali Independent Business Alliance (SIBA).
The meetup is hosted by the City of Renton, Startup425, and Luther’s Table. It happens every third Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. The meetup offers a chance for entrepreneurs to work alongside one another, hear from local experts, and trade notes over coffee.
SIBA’s presentation focused on Washington’s Department of Labor & Industries, better known as L&I. The agency oversees workplace safety, worker rights, and business registration across the state. For small business owners, L&I touches just about everything from setting up shop to keeping up with the rules.
But getting clear answers from L&I isn’t always easy. SIBA shared that many business owners face the same hurdles: limited time and money, language and cultural barriers, and physical distance from state offices. Those gaps can leave entrepreneurs guessing about rules that carry real stakes.
That’s the space SIBA’s outreach and partnership program is built to fill. The program helps businesses learn the L&I basics, follow state law, obtain an EIN (federal tax ID) and UBI (Washington’s Unified Business Identifier), file quarterly reports, and get tech assistance when they need it.
During the coworking session, the room stayed lively. Attendees swapped business cards, asked questions specific to their industries, and caught up with familiar faces. Next month’s presentation appears likely to be focused on AI.
