Heads Up: Nightly I-405 Closures This Week

Renton, WA— If your week takes you north on I-405, plan ahead. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has a busy stretch of overnight work scheduled between April 26 and May 2, including a full closure of southbound I-405 for two nights.

The big one: Southbound I-405 closes overnight Wednesday and Thursday

On the nights of Wednesday, April 29 and Thursday, April 30, all lanes of southbound I-405 will close between Coal Creek Parkway SE and N 30th Street. The closure runs from 11:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. each night, and a signed detour will guide drivers around it. Crews are using the window to install sign structures.

If you’re driving home to Renton late from Bellevue, Kirkland, or points north, this is the one to know about.

Ramps closed during the overnight window

  • NE 44th Street on- and off-ramps (your Kennydale exit)
  • Southbound I-405 off-ramp to N 30th Street
  • 112th Avenue SE on- and off-ramps
  • Coal Creek Parkway SE on-ramp to southbound I-405

Renton-specific work happening other nights

A few projects will affect local ramps and surface streets even when the freeway stays open:

  • Sunset Boulevard NE area: Temporary barrier going in at the SB I-405 off-ramp on the nights of April 29 and 30.
  • NE 30th Street on-ramp to SB I-405: Barrier pours on April 27, 28, and May 1.
  • NB I-405 off-ramp to SR 169 (Maple Valley Highway): Pavement panel and barrier work on April 27, 28, and May 1.
  • SR 167 area: Sign structure work in both directions, all five weeknights (April 27 through May 1).
  • Coulon Park / Southport stretch: Sign structure work on NB I-405 between N Southport Drive and Lake Washington Blvd SE, all five weeknights.
  • Between SR 900 and SR 181: Fiber repair and sign work on April 27 and 28.
  • Between SR 181 and SR 169: Paving on the night of April 27.

A few tips before you head out

WSDOT recommends traveling during off-peak hours and putting off any non-essential trips during the closure windows. Weather can push the schedule around, so the dates may shift.

For real-time updates, check the WSDOT mobile app, the agency’s online Travel Center map. Follow the project at their website.

Drive safe out there, Renton. A friendly reminder that April is Work Zone Safety Awareness Month. Slow down for the crews keeping our roads moving.
