Heads Up, Renton Highlands: Northbound I-405 Closes This Weekend

Renton, WA— If you’re heading north on I-405 this weekend, you’ll want to make other plans. Northbound I-405 will be closed from NE Sunset Boulevard (Exit 5) to Coal Creek Parkway SE (Exit 10) from Friday, April 17 at 11:30 p.m. to Monday, April 20 at 4 a.m.

A signed detour along Coal Creek Parkway SE will guide drivers around the closure.

Why the closure?

Crews with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) are excavating drainage crossings, replacing pavement, and performing a traffic switch as part of the I-405/Renton to Bellevue Widening and Express Toll Lanes Project. When finished, the project will extend two-lane express toll service from Renton all the way to Lynnwood.

Expect ripple effects in the Highlands

Drivers detouring along NE Sunset Boulevard will push extra traffic through the Renton Highlands. Sunset is already a busy corridor, and the freeway overflow could mean longer waits at intersections and on-ramps back to I-405. If you live or work in the Highlands and can shift errands to earlier Friday or later Monday, you’ll likely have a smoother weekend.

Plan ahead

WSDOT suggests leaning on transit, park-and-ride lots, and flexible schedules. The work depends on good weather and could be rescheduled. Check the WSDOT Travel Center map or mobile app for updates.
