Advertisements Policy

Renton Signal is an independent local news outlet covering Renton, Washington— its municipal affairs, community events, and local businesses. We are funded in part through advertising, and we take seriously our responsibility to ensure that advertising relationships do not compromise the integrity of our journalism or the trust of our community.

This policy governs all paid advertising accepted by Renton Signal, LLC across all platforms and formats, including our website, newsletter, video content, and any other distribution channels. Acceptance of advertising does not constitute editorial endorsement, and advertising revenue does not influence our coverage decisions.

Renton Signal gives preference to advertisers who are located, headquartered, or primarily operating in Renton, Skyway, or Fairwood, reflecting our commitment to the communities we serve. We reserve the right to reject, modify, or discontinue any advertisement at our sole discretion, with or without stated reason. This policy may be subject to change and was last updated on April 7th, 2026.

1. Political & Advocacy Advertising

Renton Signal does not accept advertising of a political or advocacy nature. Specifically, we do not accept:

  • Advertisements for political candidates, campaigns, or campaign committees at any level of government
  • Advertisements for political parties or partisan organizations
  • Advertisements for political action committees (PACs), super PACs, or similar political spending organizations
  • Advertisements supporting, opposing, or related to ballot measures or ballot initiatives
  • Advertisements for issue advocacy organizations whose primary purpose is to influence legislation, policy, elections, or public opinion on contested political matters

This prohibition applies regardless of the advertiser’s stated nonpartisan or educational mission. If the primary function of the advertising content is to advance a political position or influence a civic outcome, it will not be accepted.

Advertising creative— including graphics, photography, audio, video, copy, or other media— must not appear to support, endorse, or campaign for any policy position, candidate, political party, or ballot measure, even if the advertiser itself is not a political organization.

2. Discriminatory & Harmful Organizations

Renton Signal will not accept advertising from nonprofits, businesses, groups, or organizations:

  • Whose stated mission, goals, or values include the promotion of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, or religious or racial superiority
  • Whose primary mission or goals are aligned with a religious objective that does not otherwise qualify as general community service

This policy applies to stated organizational purpose, not to the personal beliefs of individual business owners. A business that serves the general public and whose advertising content is otherwise compliant is not disqualified by the personal views of its proprietors.

3. Advertising Creative Standards

3.1 Content Prohibited in All Advertising

Advertising creative submitted to Renton Signal must not contain:

  • Content that denigrates, demeans, mocks, or harasses any individual, business, community, or organization
  • False or materially misleading factual claims, including about competitors, products, services, pricing, or credentials
  • Graphic violence, gore, or disturbing imagery
  • Sexual or suggestive content
  • Content that demeans Renton Signal, LLC., the City of Renton, or the Renton community

3.2 Sponsorship Disclosure

All paid advertising and sponsored content must be clearly and prominently identified as such. Renton Signal does not accept advertising designed to mimic the appearance, tone, or format of our editorial content without clear labeling. Sponsored content will be labeled with terms such as “Sponsored,” “Advertisement,” or “Paid Partnership” in a manner that is unambiguous to the reader.

Advertisers may not use Renton Signal’s name, logo, masthead, or implied endorsement in any external materials beyond what has been explicitly authorized in writing.

4. Legal & Regulatory Compliance

All advertisers and advertising content must comply with applicable federal, Washington state, and local laws and regulations. Renton Signal will not accept:

  • Advertising for products, services, or activities that are illegal under Washington state or federal law
  • Advertising for businesses that, to our knowledge, are operating without required local licenses or permits
  • Advertising for multi-level marketing schemes or pyramid structures whose primary compensation model relies on recruitment rather than the sale of goods or services
  • Advertising for predatory financial services, including payday lending, high-cost short-term loans, or debt collection services targeting vulnerable populations

Cannabis advertising is considered on a case-by-case basis and is subject to strict compliance with Washington state advertising rules, including required age-gating disclosures. Advertising for alcohol, tobacco, and vaping products must comply with applicable regulations and may not be targeted at minors.

Gambling and sweepstakes advertising is subject to additional review for compliance with Washington state law.

5. Editorial Independence

Advertising relationships at Renton Signal are entirely separate from editorial decisions. The following principles govern this separation:

  • Advertising revenue and relationships do not influence story selection, framing, sourcing, or any other editorial judgment
  • Renton Signal reserves the right to cover any advertiser critically, accurately, and in the public interest— advertising does not confer editorial protection or immunity from coverage
  • Staff members may not personally solicit advertising from individuals or organizations they are actively covering in a journalistic capacity
  • No advertiser will be promised favorable coverage or shielded from negative coverage as a condition of or benefit of advertising with Renton Signal

Any perceived conflict between an advertising relationship and an editorial matter will be evaluated and resolved in favor of editorial integrity. Renton Signal will be transparent with our audience about these situations when disclosure is in the public interest.

6. Special Categories Requiring Additional Review

The following advertising categories are accepted but subject to additional editorial review prior to placement:

  • Real estate developers and development projects, particularly those with active land use applications, appeals, or community controversy before the City of Renton
  • Public agencies, including City of Renton departments, school districts, utilities, and other governmental entities
  • Organizations that are active subjects of ongoing Renton Signal coverage at the time of the advertising inquiry
  • Competing local media outlets

Acceptance of advertising from any of the above categories does not affect our editorial coverage of those entities. Review in these cases is intended to identify and manage potential appearances of conflict, not to exclude otherwise qualifying advertisers.

7. Advertiser Responsibilities

By placing advertising with Renton Signal, advertisers represent and warrant that:

  • All submitted content is accurate and not materially misleading
  • They hold all necessary rights, licenses, and permissions for any creative elements submitted, including images, music, trademarks, and copy
  • Their advertising content complies with all applicable laws and regulations
  • They are authorized to place advertising on behalf of the entity they represent

Renton Signal is not liable for errors or inaccuracies in advertiser-submitted content. Advertisers are solely responsible for the claims and representations contained in their advertising. Renton Signal reserves the right to request supporting documentation for factual claims at its discretion.

8. Policy Enforcement & Revisions

Renton Signal reserves the right to:

  • Reject any advertising submission that does not meet the standards of this policy
  • Discontinue a running advertisement if new information comes to light that would have disqualified it under this policy
  • Require revisions to advertising creative as a condition of acceptance
  • Apply editorial judgment to ambiguous cases not explicitly addressed in this policy

This policy is reviewed periodically and may be updated to reflect changes in our editorial standards, platform capabilities, or legal environment. The current version of this policy will be maintained on our website.
